Mission Statement
Welcome to the Memorial School Media Center!
Our Mission Statement:
"The mission of the library media center program is to insure that our students become effective users of ideas, information, and technology and develop a lifelong interest in reading." Our media center program strives to support and enhance the district's educational programs by providing a variety of curriculum support and enrichment materials both print and electronic. We encourage students to become educated information seekers and informed decision makers, not only for academic purposes, but also for their own interests and purposes while fostering an appreciation of literature and a love of learning.
Each student visits the media center on a weekly basis with his/her class for a "Library Skills" lesson. During this class period, students have the opportunity to select and borrow a book(s). Individual students or small groups may come to the media center to exchange books at the discretion of the classroom teacher. In addition, classroom teachers may schedule visits to the media center as needed for an additional lesson, research, book exchange, or use of the media center computers or smart board.
All of our teachers have been trained to use our Follett Destiny automated library system. Teachers can access Destiny from their classroom computers to search the catalog and check the availability of media center materials. Using Destiny, teachers can research the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards and locate media center materials that coincide with the standards. In addition, teachers can create reading lists for their students.
Our kindergarten--2nd grade students have the opportunity to use Bookflix to read books online while in the media center.
Our third grade students receive training to use the Follett Destiny System throughout the year. Students enjoy using this informative and fun online catalog to locate books.
