  About Mrs. Helfricht:

Hi. My name is Mrs. Helfricht. I am the K-3 ESL teacher at Memorial School. I have also taught first, second and third grade at Memorial School. I have been teaching for 20 years in Maywood.

I have been a lifelong resident of Bergen county, New Jersey. I have many wonderful memories of growing up in this area. I live with my husband two sons and two dogs.

We enjoy reading, fitness, travel, culture, language, cooking, eating, dancing, tennis, hiking, nature, shopping and listening to music.

I graduated from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey  with a B.A. in Communications and K-8 Certification in Elementary Education. I completed the master's degree program for teachers at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey and obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T) and a second certification in English as a Second Language as well as a Supervisor's License. I have also completed a master's plus 30 credits program through TCNJ and online courses.

My first interest in ESL is from helping my mother and her family to speak English. My mother came to America when she was sixteen years old. I learned to speak Polish from my mom and Spanish at school while I was growing up.

While I was in college, I worked for the Even Start program where I made home visits to families in Garfield and Lodi helping them to improve their English. I loved the feeling I got from helping other families. I spenyt time getting to know the entire family in their home and worked with toddlers to grandparents. We got to know each other very well and they made me feel like family.

I worked as a college professor and taught college level E.S.L. Reading/Oral Communication courses in the evenings at Passaic County Community College.

A few summers ago, I completed an ESL summer program teaching level 4 and 5 international high school students for Education First.

I believe it is important to make language learning fun. I enjoy making connections between learning in the classroom and real life experiences. I use an interactive hands-on approach. I enjoy incorporating music, singing, dance, technology, health and wellness into my lessons. Each child is unique. My mission is to utilize various methods of teaching and learning to help each child shine brilliantly.
